Golfers Tee Off Season

After a couple of delays due to Mother Nature, the Britton-Hecla golf squad was able to tee off its’ spring season at Leola in gusty conditions on Monday.

“The wind was a great challenge, and we took it in stride as there is not much one can do when it comes to Mother Nature,” said Nack. “We have now played on artificial putting greens. It was an interesting experience to see the players approach a different concept to a golf course many had not seen before.

“A few takeaways from this short nine-hole event would be that we need to practice and put in our time and effort every chance we get. If we want to get better, get out and play golf. This year we would like to see a more competitive result at the end of our golf meets, while displaying sportsmanship and integrity. We would also like to thank the Britton Country Club staff and members for their time and efforts to our great course.”

The B-H girls finished third in a four-team field and the boys were fourth among six teams at Leola. Eureka was the girls titlist with a 153 total, followed by Leola at 195, Britton-Hecla 206, and Ipswich 217. Herreid took the boys crown in a competitive race at 151, followed by Bowdle 155, Aberdeen Chrisitain 165, Britton-Hecla 167, Eureka 169, and Ipswich 182.

Alaina Dosch of Eureka took girls medalist honors with a 49. McKenna Heer led the Lady Braves with a 57 and placed sixth, Brynlee Patterson carded a 75 to finished 10th, Corinne Bosse a 76 for 11th, and Kya McLaen a 77 for 12th.

On the boys side Bowdle’s Cooper Oxner was the medalist with a 46. Dylan Redler paced Britton-Hecla with a 52, good for sixth. Ty Fagerland shot a 55 to place 10th, and Jace Rein carded a 60 for 18th.

Nack is pleased with the number of golfers on the squad this season that includes a number of new faces.

“We’ve been focusing on the rules and etiquette of the golf game while we get some swings in when we can at the course,” said Nack. “We have eight boys and one girl participating in the junior high level and have 16 high school boys and eight high school girls. A few of these golfers are giving their efforts towards track as well.”

B-H has a junior meet scheduled in Clark on Saturday and the next varsity meet is set for Clark on May 3. However, Nack is working with some neighboring golf programs to try to schedule a few smaller meets to fill in the schedule.

The pre-region meet is scheduled for Watertown on May 13 with the regional in Watertown on May 20.
