Ethan Averill Reasy, age 29, of Rapid City, formerly of Aberdeen, South Dakota, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2023, near Sturgis, SD.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Charmaine Young will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 29, 2023 at St. John de Britto Catholic Church in Britton. Rev. Fr. Albert Cizewski will officiate. Interment will be at Britton Cemetery under the direction of the Olson Funeral Chapel.

In October, six Britton women set out on a pilgrimage that would take them out of their comfort zones to walk in the footsteps of the saints in Portugal, Spain, France, and Rome. Last week, we detailed the first several days of their journey, and rejoin the trip as they arrive in Rome.

Sandra E. Freeman of Britton, SD, passed away at her home December 22, 2023, at the age of 81. Sandy was born in Winona, MN November 11, 1942, to Arthur E. Avery and Dorothy Alma Louise (Stoltenburg) Avery. She attended schools in Winona, MN, Watertown, Bristol, and Aberdeen, South Dakota, and graduated from Aberdeen Central in 1960. While in high school, Sandy worked at Lacey’s Dairy Bar on South Main. After graduating, she worked in the National Food Store, (National “T”) as a cashier. She married and had two children, Kyle Ackerman and Tammy Ackerman. Sandy worked at 3M while the kids were in high school and college but quit in 1984 and began studying Communication Disorders at Northern State University, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree, and began working for the Black Hills Special Services Coop as the Speech Therapist in the Hot Springs School System which included two country schools for two years. She then moved to Bowdle and worked for the Oahe Special Education Coop for the schools in Bowdle, Hoven, Tolstoy, two country schools, and Wakpala.

The Langford Area girls basketball team put together back-to-back wins for the first time this season by stopping Wilmot 50-36 last week Tuesday.

The Britton-Hecla gymnastics squad won its fourth straight team title last week Tuesday, posting a 132.950 score to outdistance Aberdeen Central and Sisseton.

2023 has been an exciting year. From near record-breaking weather to big projects and events in Journal Country, it is always difficult to pick a top story of the year. But considering the long-term implications of this one and how many times it made the news, the Marshall County Courthouse project must be considered the top story of 2023.
